Program Description

Ultrasound (Sonography) is an innovative imaging modality that affords anatomic images in two-dimensional planes and may provide information on tissue characterization. In early 1900s, during World War I, sound (sonar) was used by the U.S. Navy to locate German submarines. At the present major technological advancements combined with increasing clinical and investigative interest in the methods of sound technology have accompanied the development of state of the art equipment that has been clinically applicable to medicine and has greatly benefited in assessing Pathophysiological states. This program is designed for medical professionals seeking employment as a Sonographer (Ultrasound Technician). Employment is available in Hospitals, Urgent Care Facilities, Emergency Rooms and Imaging Diagnostic Centers. Ultrasound Technician is an extremely dynamic and challenging profession that includes a through understanding of human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, sectional anatomy, diagnostic imaging, ultrasound physics, and ultrasound techniques in image production. Ultrasound Technicians will work side by side with physicians, nurses and Radiology Department staff developing images by sound waves used for diagnostic and prognostic evaluations.

Preparation includes extensive theoretical and laboratory background in areas of human anatomy and physiology, basic principles of diagnostic medical ultrasound, patient care and preparation, legal and ethical aspects of ultrasonographic practice, departmental protocols, and diagnostic protocols.

Emphasis will be placed on information and techniques necessary for ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic and Medical Sonography).

Graduates will be ready to enter the health-care field as professionals, responsible for gathering information to aid with patient diagnosis.

The students graduating from this program will be prepared to work in a variety of imaging laboratories, hospitals and clinics as entry-level sonographers.
